After months of research and development in partnership with the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH), in 2016 Elite launched the WoodenSpring, a spring made entirely from Swiss solid wood.

This completely unique spring crafted in-house in our workshops is the only one of its kind on the market, offering levels of comfort and strength on a par with the metal springs used in Elite’s original box spring bed base. Now a tried and tested success, the innovation has found its market – and our customers are its best ambassadors.

Every wooden spring in the WoodenBoxspring bed base is able to move fully independently. Each individual spring gradually compresses, so together they provide optimum point-by-point support for the mattress and enhanced sleeping comfort – all the more so in that the bed base accounts for 30% of the comfort and support your back needs.

Metal-free bed base

The WoodenBoxspring bed base is far more effective than a slat base, providing perfect suspension and independent sleeping zones. Its highly flexible components deliver equivalent performance to a standard bed base, without using any metal. The frame is assembled in traditional fashion with wooden dowels: there are no nails, screws, staples or anything else that could act as an antenna and thus disturb sensitive sleepers.

Exceptional acoustic and thermal insulation

Thanks to its natural material and unique design, the WoodenBoxspring bed base boasts excellent acoustic and thermal insulation properties. Its natural filling helps maintain a stable bedding temperature in both summer and winter, when it provides effective insulation from underfloor heating. Its distinctive structure also absorbs sound waves, resulting in excellent soundproofing.

Historic knowhow

Our approach has remained unchanged through the years: artisanal manufacture of high-quality beds prioritising local, natural materials, made in our workshops in Aubonne in the Canton of Vaud since 1895. While our products are now exported worldwide (even as far away as China) each bed, bed base and mattress is still produced in its entirety on the shores of Lake Geneva. We’ve always preferred short supply chains, ensuring we remain efficient and environmentally-friendly.

A zero-waste alternative

Our avant-garde wooden spring system is a world-beater in every respect when it comes to its environmental impact, too, using spruce wood from sustainably managed forests cared for by responsible forestry companies in French-speaking Switzerland. Its manufacture consumes few resources and boasts an excellent carbon balance. As a tree grows, it absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere and converts into oxygen. Even after it’s been made into a spring, the wood continues to store this carbon, thus helping to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The durability of Elite beds is already beyond dispute; this new process further embodies that ethos by extending the life of the mattress. The WoodenSpring is an inherently renewable, environmentally-friendly product and is fully recyclable.
